Old Man Logan
The first trailer of the last Wolverine movie has been released, and similar to the Deadpool movie there are two trailers.
Darken
The trailer revealed a good bit about the movie. The first thing I would like to get into is a scene where Wolverine is in a deadlock with another clawed opponent.
If you look at the scene you clearly see three claws trying to stab Wolverine. They are extended pretty far out. Its hard to say with just one scene, but it does seem to indicate that Darken is in this movie.
For those of you who do not know who Darken is. He is Wolverine’s son, his powers are very similar to his father, but with one major difference. Darken does have three claws, but only two of them actually come out of his knuckles. The third one comes out of his wrist.
The claw placement is the main reason why this scene does point to Darken instead of anyone else. Sabretooth doesn’t have the claw length needed to fit the scene. Lady Deathstrike is a possibility, but unlikely because they have already used her in X2.
Story
So as shown in the trailer this version of Wolverine is much older. Unknown to most fans is that Wolverine’s healing factor does diminish over time. In this trailer you can see that by looking at the scars on Logan’s back.
Professor Xavier is still around, but suffers from Alzheimer’s. That may explain why he is in a hospital bed in parts of the trailer.
This movie in particular looks pretty dark, and I think it really should be. This movie is based on Old Man Logan, and it is one of the darker comic books.
Noticeably absent are the rest of the X-men. In the comic, Wolverine withdrew from the world because he was tricked into fighting and killing every member of the X-men. Now I do not expect that to be the case here, but you can tell that something devistating happened to Logan.
That brings me to the next point, what happened to the mutants. Well to go back to the comic, Emma Frost does say that the mutants were a genetic anomaly. In this movie, I would be shocked if they used that with Mr. Sinister being the main villain. I would say that the amount of soldiers we see does seem to indicate that we will see an organization similar to the MRD. At this time there is no real explanation for the mutant extinction.
The girl
The girl in the trailer may be a mutant known as X-23. At least I think, in the trailer they show an actress named Dafne Keen. At this time she has not be confirmed as X-23, but it appears she is important for the movie regardless.
X-23 is a clone of Wolverine. Much like Darken, she shares Wolverine’s powers, and her claw placement is different from Wolverine. She has two claws in her hands and one in each foot. Unlike Darken though she went through the Weapon program, and had her bones coated in adamantium. X-23, aka Laura Kinney, is an important character in the comics because she takes up the mantle of Wolverine after the original dies.
The reason why I say that it is only possible is because they have three actresses playing mutants. Sienna Novikov, Jaden Frances and Dafne have all been confirmed for the movie, but none of them have been confirmed for X-23.
There is actually a chance that Dafne isn’t playing X-23. We don’t really see much fighting in this trailer, and most of the fighting we do see is done by Hugh Jackman. All of this could be just clever editing done for the trailer to make her look like X-23.
Personally, I don’t think Dafne is X-23 at all. X-23 is an emotionless killer when you first see her. That’s not what I see in the trailer at all. I see a little girl, she smiles, she's calm, she looks like someone in need of protection. In my opinion, Dafne Keen is not playing X-23, but Hope Summers.
Its not as weird as it sounds. Dafne fits the age range better. The current storyline fits Hope Summers story pretty well. When you add in that Jaden Francis fits the look of X-23 better it makes a little more since, but I could be wrong.
Villains
Ok so in this movie we have two sets of villains. One we have the Reavers, and the other is Mr. Sinister.
The Reavers are a group of cybernetic enhanced individuals that like to fight Wolverine, and kill mutants. In Messiah Complex, they were members of the Purifiers. Based on the trailer, it would seem that the soldiers are after any mutants which does fit the Purifiers perfectly.
Ask for Mr. Sinister. He will be named Nathaniel Essex the head of an unnamed corporation. Essex is responsible for the current state of the world. Nothing else is really known. I would expect being that Mr. Sinister is one of the smarter X-men villains that he has a hand in creating X-23 and Darken.
The Grave
Inside the trailer, it appears that someone dies. In the comic Old Man Logan, we see a very different Logan. He is a pacifist and refuses to take out his claws for any reason. That is until his family is killed by a group of villains. Only after a great tragedy do we see the Wolverine we know.
This movie appears to be working the same way. The blood on Logan’s shirt is probably a soldier’s, and not who he is buried. Since this is Patrick Stewarts last X-men film, I would say it is probably his grave, but we will see.
Thoughts on the film and trailer
My personal thoughts on the trailer, I enjoyed it. I think it answered my question of how this movie will go. It will be a darker experience. The story looks to have a bit of depth to it. I hope the movie turns out as well as it looks.
